Noah Webster was a renowned American lexicographer, acknowledged as the "Father of American Scholarship and Education". He is believed to be obsessive about words, grammar and punctuation and published some of the most respected American-English manuals. His first book titled ‘A Grammatical Institute of the English Language’ which was a speller and a grammar publication was popularly known as ‘Blue-Blacked Speller’. He had a huge interest in politics and marked the beginning of his career as a political writer with a book on the principles of the federal constitution. He went on to form the ‘Connecticut Society for the Abolition of Slavery’ and the first daily of New York popularly known as the ‘Commercial Advertiser’. His never-ending obsession of English compelled him to start working on words used on a regular basis. Within a year he started collecting these words for his dictionary which took 28 years to be published. It was initially titled as ‘The American Spelling Book’ but was renamed to ‘The Elementary Spelling Book’. It was a huge dictionary of 70,000 words out of which 12000 were new words. He learnt 26 different languages including Sanskrit to form these words.
