A 'pheasant-turned-author' Mario Gianluigi Puzo's life story is no less than a Cinderella fairytale. Born in a deprived family of Neapolitan immigrants, Puzo graduated from NY's City College. Thereafter, he joined the U.S. Air Force and participated in World War II. Puzo's weak vision prevented him from undertaking combat duties so he worked as a PR officer in Germany for several years. In 1950, he authored his first story 'The Last Christmas'. The success of this piece made him write 'The Dark Arena' (1955). That's how he started his professional writing career.
