Idi Amin Dada was a Ugandan politician who served as the President of Uganda from 1971 to 1979. He was a general in the army and overthrew the elected government under Milton Obote to assume all powers as president of Uganda. Idi Amin ruled with ruthlessness for eight years and his regime saw the massacre of an estimated 300,000 civilians. In 1972, he expelled all Indian and Pakistani citizens from the country. His increased military expenditure severely impacted the economy of Uganda. His reign of terror was brought to an end in 1979 when Ugandan exiles and Tanzanians took control of Kampala, the capital.
