François Maurice Adrien Marie Mitterrand was a French politician who served as President of France during 1981-1995. He was the longest serving French president. Mitterrand began his political life on the Catholic nationalist right. He Subsequently joined the 'Resistance,' moved to the left ideology, and held ministerial office several times. Mitterrand was a smart politician and outmaneuvered his rivals to play an important role in almost every presidential election from 1965 to 1988. he was elected President for the first time in May 1981, re-elected in 1988, and held office until 1995. He partenered with German Chancellor Helmut Kohl to quicken European integration. He was a strong promoter of culture and implemented a range of reforms.
